From 2 to 4 April 2025, the ALBATROSS partners in Tanzania are hosting a workshop to co-design climate early warning services for the Kigamboni area. More than 20 key stakeholders in the area have come together, starting with the Tanzania Meteorology Authority (TMA) and including a wide range of actors from the Ministries of Water, Health, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries or Transport to various corporations (Tanzania Shipping Agency Corporation, Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation), as well as specialised agencies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and WWF Finland.

Tanzania Meteorology Authority (TMA) issues and distributes warnings with impact information for some meteorological phenomena such as heavy rain, strong wind, large waves and tsunami for land, sea and three lake areas. Each warning typically has different severity levels (yellow, amber, red) depending on the expected impact and probability. TMA stakeholders have knowledge of severe weather impacts at the community level and how severe weather affects their own operations. However, they need to specify impact information for other phenomena, including thunderstorms and low temperatures, for example.

The aim of this workshop is to have a common understanding of the current needs and to decide which impacts and advisories should be included in the next updates of the warning service. They are also discussing how citizen tools can be used to collect severe weather impact information.
