On 21-24 October 2024, the ALBATROSS partner Joseph Muhwanga, from UNESCO, participated in the 9th Africa Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction and the 8th High-Level Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction, both held in Windhoek, Republic of Namibia, under the theme “Act Now for the Resilient Africa We Want”.

The two events are hosted by the Government of the Republic of Namibia and are being organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and the African Union Commission in collaboration with the Southern African Development Community.

Organized once every three years, the AfRP-9 has established itself as a critical mechanism that brings together Member States, Regional Economic Communities, civil society organizations, development partners and other disaster risk reduction stakeholders to review progress, share experiences, good practices and lessons learned in implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in Africa. Indeed, over 700 participants have joined the meeting, from Africa and beyond.

AfRP-9 will seek to build a consensus on the way forward to enable Member States to deliver on their commitments to the Sendai Framework and the Programme of Action for its implementation in Africa, thereby contributing to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.

The ALBATROSS colleague Joseph Muhwanga is attending the meeting as a member of the Drafting Committee that will help prepare the text of the Windhoek Declaration.
