Located on the east coast of Madagascar, the Atsinanana region has 72% of rural households. Located in this region, the city of Tamatave is rapidly growing, the second most populous city of the county, and an important economic and industrial centre. This incoming migration to Tamatave city is driven by poverty, food insecurity, and environmental degradation in the rural areas.
In terms of weather and climate-related challenges, this area suffers from cyclones and flooding resulting in soil erosion and reduced time for fishing, therefore affecting mostly to local farming and fishing communities.
Current use and gaps in climate services
Climate services and early warning system exist in the Tamatave region, but they are not easily accessible for local communities, especially for farmers without phones. Farmers report shortage of technicians on the ground to inform and interact with farmers, and, therefore, they lack access to crop calendars that are linked to climate data.
Collaboration of the meteorological service and the regional agriculture/livestock department will be promoted to integrate climate data into agricultural tools.
Experiences and plans for Nature-based Solutions
Some projects on reforestation and conservation of protected areas are taking place in this region. However, unsustainable farming practices (slash-and-burn) is currently practiced, and some agroforestry activities such as coffee growing and palm tree introduction failed due to limited market access.
Importance of studies on economic feasibility, infrastructure and marketing channels appeared as important before promoting and/or expanding agroforestry activities like cocoa and coffee. However, these agroforestry projects are considered relevant for environmental sustainability and income diversification in the region. Improving blue, green, grey infrastructure are also planned to support environmental resilience.
