Capacity-Building Workshop for UNESCO-designated site Managers
On Monday, 23rd February 2026, UNESCO Madagascar organised a training, exchange, and capacity-building workshop in Antananarivo for UNESCO-designated site Managers. The workshop focused on the process of establishing a Biosphere Reserve under the Man and Biosphere (MAB) program.
Twenty-three (23) participants representing ten UNESCO-designated site managers’ institutions in Madagascar attended the workshop.
ALBATROSS contributed to the discussions by presenting its multilevel policy analysis of Madagascar’s environmental and climate frameworks, raising critical questions about whether the current policy environment enables biosphere reserves to fulfil their potential in climate resilience. The presentation also highlighted gaps, challenges, and opportunities, while showcasing ongoing Nature-based Solutions (NbS) work in the Kirindy Mite Biosphere Reserve within the Morondava Hub, particularly mangrove restoration efforts.
In addition, ALBATROSS shared policy briefs tailored to the Madagascar context, which sparked engaging and insightful discussions among participants. By the conclusion of the workshop, attendees had developed a deeper understanding of the benefits of the MAB approach for effective site management and the importance of aligning national frameworks with local conservation initiatives. The exchange underscored the collective commitment to strengthening biosphere reserves as vital instruments for climate adaptation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable community development.
