Kumasi is the second largest and the fastest growing city of Ghana (5.47% per year) as well as an economic hub for the entire area. The Kumasi’s region is one of the most agriculturally productive areas in the country. Together with agriculture, industrial and commercial activities are key sectors in this region.
It receives influx of migrants from different parts of Ghana and west Africa, resulting in rapid urbanisation and informal settlements. As the metropolis is situated in the transitional forest zone, this is threatened by climatic factors and land consumption due to urbanisation.
Regarding weather and climate-change-related challenges, this area suffers from floods, especially flash floods that cause settlement flooding, particularly affecting marginalised groups living in these settlements, and flooding of agricultural fields.
Current use and gaps in climate services
The Ghana Meteorological Service provides climate services, especially weather forecasts and disaster alerts. Users found the climate services useful for agricultural planning (planting, harvesting) and public health responses However, they lack precision at the local level and there is a strong need for more localised data. In addition, the way climate services are designed is not understandable to many users; local community members report that they do not understand them and how to use them.
In this situation, training workshops for local communities and relevant stakeholders on understanding and using climate services and managing risks, as well as incorporating community feedback into the (re)design of climate services, were identified as necessary.
Experiences and Plans for Nature-based Solutions
Stakeholders in this region have been participating in community-based tree planting along waterways and settlements, aimed at wetland restoration. Education and sensitization campaigns have also been organised with communities on waste management, environmental practices, keeping waterways and sensitive areas clear.
Following this approach, it was agreed to hold community workshops on flood risks and nature-based solutions; to work with communities and local governments to monitor environmental changes; to restore wetlands and create green spaces to increase resilience to flooding; and to promote financial incentives for local volunteer groups to participate in the programmes.
