Co-development of Climate Services for the Umzimvubu Catchment hub

On the 10th of April 2025, ALBATROSS partners in South Africa hosted a participatory online workshop to bring together project collaborators to discuss the co-development of climate service tools in partnership with climate scientists from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and the ALBATROSS technical team.
With 18 participants in attendance, the workshop focused on available options to enhance a user-centred, impact-based forecasting system to support climate change adaptation efforts in the Umzimvubu Hub situated in the Eastern Cape: one of seven focal areas of the Albatross project.
The session facilitated technical exchanges between SAWS and ALBATROSS, with a focus on refining seasonal forecasts and early warning systems for climate hazards experienced in the Umzimvubu catchment such as floods, droughts, and wildfires. Discussions also explored how these tools could support nature-based adaptation planning and build on existing climate service platforms to improve early warning capabilities for the future.
